Revival of Epicentre Recreational Facility in Mira Mesa Unanimously Approved by Board of Supervisors
The Board of Supervisors has unanimously approved a 45-year lease agreement with the city of San Diego to revitalize the vacant Epicentre recreational facility in the Mira Mesa neighborhood. The San Diego City Council had previously approved the lease agreement on July 2.
According to Board of Supervisors Vice Chair Terra Lawson-Remer, the county will invest $10.5 million in renovations for the facility. The project aims to address the needs of the Mira Mesa community, which has often been neglected. The revamped Epicentre will serve as a youth recreation center and neighborhood hub, offering a wide range of programs such as career counseling, cooking classes, events, gardening, mentorship, and more.
The interior of the Epicentre will feature game tables, fitness equipment, workstations, a demonstration kitchen, and various activity rooms. The outdoor area will include open turf spaces, sport courts, and gardens. The county will lease the property from the city for just $1 a year.
Renovations are set to begin this fall, with the grand opening scheduled for late 2025 or early 2026. Supervisor Monica Montgomery Steppe expressed her excitement to be part of the project, while City Councilman Kent Lee highlighted the partnership as a realization of a long-standing community dream.
During public comments, supporters expressed gratitude for the efforts to move the Epicentre project forward. Residents emphasized the importance of ensuring the facility’s success for future generations. The Epicentre, once a popular youth venue, closed in 2016 but is now set to be revitalized for the benefit of the Mira Mesa community.
The county will also provide on-site activities and programming, including performing arts, music, special events, and homework assistance. The facility, originally built in 1975 as the Mira Mesa Library, will now be transformed into a vibrant community space for all ages to enjoy.
