Update on Venues for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics: No New Permanent Venues to be Built
LA28, the organizing committee for the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, has unveiled an updated venue plan for the Summer Games. The plan includes event re-assignments and the decision to move some competitions outside the city of Los Angeles. This move is expected to save over $150 million and generate new revenue to help maintain a balanced budget for the Games.
According to LA28 Chairperson and President Casey Wasserman, the updated venue plan will showcase some of the greatest stadiums and arenas ever built, providing an ideal stage for the world’s top athletes. The plan involves utilizing existing venues rather than constructing new ones, with no new permanent venues expected to be built in Los Angeles.
Key highlights of the updated venue plan include gymnastics at Crypto.com Arena, swimming at SoFi Stadium, basketball at the Intuit Dome, and track and field events at the historic Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. The Sepulveda Basin Recreation Area will host BMX Freestyle, BMX Racing, skateboarding, and archery for both the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Additionally, diving will return to the USC campus pool, while Long Beach will host artistic swimming and para-swimming competitions. Two sports, canoe slalom, and softball, will be moved to Oklahoma City due to the lack of suitable venues in Southern California.
The plan also includes the sharing of duties for the Opening and Closing ceremonies between the Coliseum and SoFi Stadium. LA28 has submitted the updated venue assignments to the City of LA for approval, including the proposal to move some events outside the city’s boundaries.
With the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics scheduled for July 14-30, 2028, the city is set to become a three-time host of the Summer Games, joining the ranks of London and Paris. The decision to utilize existing venues and move some competitions outside the city reflects a commitment to sustainability and cost-effectiveness in hosting the prestigious event.
