Weekend Guide for Juneteenth in Houston: June 19-23, 2024

Houston is gearing up for an exciting weekend filled with Juneteenth celebrations, Pride festivities, and a variety of events happening all around the city. From art exhibitions to live music performances, there is something for everyone to enjoy. Here’s a rundown of some of the top things to do in Houston this weekend:

All Weekend Long:

  • 4th Annual "And Through Their Eyes Grow Thorns" Exhibition at MATCH: Explore storytelling through a queer lens of color with paintings, sculpture, and more. Times vary.
  • Ice House Radio at Brasil: Enjoy live DJ broadcasts on the patio at Brasil Cafe in Montrose. Times vary.
  • Fade To Black Play Festival at MATCH: Experience new short play works by African American playwrights. $45 and up. 8pm.
  • Catastrophic Theatre presents "Tamarie’s Texas Toast!" at MATCH: A summer production celebrating the Lone Star state. Pay-what-you-can. 7:30pm.
  • Desde El Alma: Songs from the Heart starring Camille Zamora at Hobby Center: Enjoy music by renowned soprano Camille Zamora. $49 and up. Friday 7:30pm; Saturday 7pm.
  • Comedian Matt McCusker at Houston Improv: Delight in stories and adventures from the co-host of "Matt and Shane’s Secret Podcast." $100 for 4, and up. Times vary.
  • The Sklar Brothers at the Secret Group: Enjoy back-to-back nights of comedy with the twin brother comics. $20. Friday 8pm; Saturday 8pm and 10pm.
  • Houston Autograph & Sports Card Show at Bayou City Event Center: Meet sports stars and shop for memorabilia. Free on Friday; $10 on Saturday and Sunday. Times vary.
  • International Gem & Jewelry Show at NRG Center: Shop for unique jewelry and gemstones directly from manufacturers. $6 and up. Times vary.
  • Cyclone of Memories: An AstroWorld Exhibition at Houston Toy Museum: Relive memories of Houston’s beloved theme park with souvenirs and collectibles. $14; $10 for ages 65+; kids pay their age up to 13. Noon to 6pm.
  • Houston Astros vs. Baltimore Orioles at Minute Maid Park: Catch a game and snag giveaways. $25 and up. Times vary.
  • ImagineNation Kid Expo at Katy Merrell Center: A family-friendly expo with activities for kids. $10, valid for both days. Free for ages 3 and under. 10am to 6pm.
  • Houston Symphony presents "Jurassic Park" at Hobby Center: Watch the movie with a live orchestra. $50 and up. Showtimes vary.

Juneteenth, Wednesday, June 19, 2024:

  • 45th Annual Al Edwards Juneteenth Celebration at 1859 Ashton Villa: Live reading of General Order No. 3 at the official Juneteenth historic monument. 10am to 11am.
  • Juneteenth: Free Admission at Holocaust Museum Houston: Explore the Kinsey African American Art & History Collection. 10am to 7pm.
  • Juneteenth Family Fun Day at Reedy Chapel AME: Community block party and historic reenactment. 1pm to 6pm.
  • Embers of Freedom & The Art of Poetry at Houston Museum of African American Culture: Celebrate Juneteenth with performances. 2pm and 4pm.
  • Juneteenth Elevated Kickback Experience at Freedmen’s Town Visitor Center: Juneteenth celebration with food, music, and art. 4pm to 8pm.
  • Drive-By Truckers in Concert at House of Blues: Southern rock group performance. $39.50 and up. 7pm.
  • DIIV in Concert at White Oak Music Hall: Dream pop band performance. $32. 7pm.
  • RuPaul’s Drag Race Trivia Night at City Orchard: Trivia night with fabulous prizes. 7pm.
  • Houston Dynamo FC vs. Seattle Sounders at Shell Energy Stadium: Soccer match observing Juneteenth. $19 and up. 7:30pm.
